There are many ways that you can make your views heard and get involved in the asylum debate. Help us put the positive case for asylum and join the debate now!
TV and radio
Asylum is always up for debate on the TV and radio. Unfortunately such discussions are often dominated by misinformation and fear. Next time you come across a radio or TV phone-in, why not bring some sense to the debate and make a call? If you don't want to call, sending a short text message can often be just as effective.
Online
Many websites host online discussion forums where you can ask questions and express your opinions on issues of the day. National media such as the BBC, The Guardian and The Times host live online chat rooms and discussion forums around particular subjects. You can also take part in political online discussion forums such as EPolitix.com and openDemocracy.
Local
Keep a look out for events and forums that you can get involved in in your local area. Make sure you take part in any polls, surveys or local meetings on the issue. You may be able to allay fears or challenge misinformation about how immigration or asylum seekers are impacting on the local area. Make sure your local councillor or MP is clear on the facts and ask them what they are doing to address prejudice and fear in the community.
Remember!
- Prepare what you are going to say before joining the debate. Writing out bullet points that you can refer back to can help.
- Try to stay calm and stick to your main message. Discussions can become heated, making it easy to lose focus of your argument.
- Arm yourself with the facts. Have a look at our press myths page for some facts refuting common press myths or our page on asylum facts.
