The conference will present the work of the Vulnerable Women’s Project, a three-year programme run by the Refugee Council and funded by Comic Relief which addresses the issue of rape and sexual violence against refugee and asylum seeking women through individual casework, policy and campaigning.

The event is for practitioners and policy makers working in the field and will consider the project’s findings on the impact of rape on refugee women and best practice in client care, examine policy changes which could ease the social conditions of refugee women affected by rape and launch the advocacy and campaigning phase of the project.

During the course of the day there will be a series of workshops, which are repeated allowing participants the choice of which to attend. These include:

  • Best Practice in casework with asylum seeking women survivors of sexual violence
Elena Hage, Therapeutic Caseworker, Refugee Council
  • Overcoming the barriers women face in the asylum process
    Deborah Singer, Asylum Aid
  • Practical Assistance for Destitute Women: Section Four and Local Authority Support
