So what’s it all about?
Thousands of asylum seekers in the UK are being forced into destitution. They are not allowed to work. But this isn’t working. Refused asylum seekers are being left homeless, hungry and without hope by our government, but they aren’t going back.
Our Just.Fair Campaign aims to end destitution for asylum seekers.
Latest
1. Entitlement to healthcare
The Refugee Council is involved in an ongoing campaign with partner organisations from the health, refugee and human rights sectors opposing charging refused asylum seekers for secondary hospital treatment. We are also campaigning against proposals to restrict access to primary care – that is, the ability to see a GP for free.
Recent developments may mean refused asylum seekers will no longer be barred from treatment – see our campaign page for more details.
2. Action on destitution

We are working in partnerships to combat destitution. The Still Human Still Here Campaign brings together organisations that believe we can campaign more effectively with a common banner. We also demonstrate the strength and diversity of those appalled at the enforced destitution of people refused asylum.
From January 2008, we have been involved in a new campaign to combat poverty in the UK.
This started off with a series of Poverty Hearings held in Poverty and Homelessness Week from 26 January onwards. More details >>
