Make 2007 the year that the government ends the destitution of asylum seekers. It’s morally indefensible to use the threat of starvation in the UK as a tool of government policy.
That’s why the Refugee Council is joining with many other charities and faith groups in a coalition called Still Human – Still Here to oppose the withdrawal of support for refused asylum seekers.
The government says it’s not responsible and these people shouldn’t be here; we say they are here - they often don’t have a safe way to go anywhere and the government must face up to that. This is an issue which won’t go away.
The government says looking after these people costs too much; we say in that case let them work legally and in safety as they would wish.
How you can help end destitution in the UK
Still Human Still Here is supporting an amendment to the current UK Borders Bill, going through Parliament during Spring 2007
Contact your MP today and demand they support the amendment to clause 17. The amendment ensures that refused asylum seekers have access to asylum support while they are in the UK and will therefore no longer be destitute.
Throughout 2007 Still Human Still Here will be campaigning for the government to:
- End the threat and use of destitution as a tool of Government policy against refused asylum seekers
- Continue financial support and accommodation to refused asylum seekers as provided during the asylum process and grant permission to work until such a time as they have left the UK or have been granted a legal status.
- Provide full access to health care and education
