The Refugee Council is one of the leading organisations in the UK working with refugees and people seeking asylum. We not only give help and support, but also work with clients to ensure their needs and concerns are voiced and addressed. Volunteers are a key part of many of the services that support our clients and work alongside paid staff across the organisation.

The Destitution Centre is located in Hackney and is open on Fridays. The centre is a lifeline for asylum seekers who have no recourse to public funds. It is often one of the only sources of support for these clients, many of whom are homeless and all of whom are financially destitute. The centre offers a hot lunch, use of computers, washing facilities and a safe space for people to gather. It is a dynamic and busy place and the post offers the opportunity to form connections with clients while providing a vital service which helps clients gain back a small sense of dignity.
