Separated Children: Strong Voices project

Separated children are one of the most vulnerable groups in our society, often socially excluded and stigmatised. Strong Voices project, developed by the Refugee Council’s Children’s Section and run in Birmingham, has been designed with the aim to help them rebuild their confidence and develop a wide range of skills which will help their integration into their local communities, improve their performance at school and help them pave way into higher education and employment.

Strong Voices sessions are planned with the aim to provide an opportunity for separated children to learn and grow, whilst having fun. Through involvement in the project, separated children are gaining knowledge and understanding of the UK asylum system and developing a wide range of skills including communication, negotiating and presentation skills.

Separated children are also provided with the opportunity to meet and socialise with other young people and play an active role in society including involvement in youth parliament and consultations. We work to enable separated children raise issues important to them with relevant service providers, decision makers and agencies who have interest in the views and needs of separated children, in order to improve the service provision for this group of young people.
