Principles of voluntary return

International human rights law sets out both the right of return and the right to asylum, which is a right not to be returned to situations of persecution or serious danger. In seeking to carry out these rights, to find practical answers to refugee situations and through the development of assisted return programmes for asylum seekers, principles and guidelines have been drawn up and varying definitions of ‘voluntary return’ adopted or proposed.
