Working in parliament

Refugee and asylum issues are amongst the hottest topics in UK politics. In fact, in the past decade there have been five pieces of legislation passed by Parliament that have had a direct impact on refugees and asylum seekers – more than on any comparable issue. Sadly, many of these changes have had a negative impact on asylum seekers.

Therefore, the Refugee Council’s work with politicians is incredibly important. We try to ensure that in every relevant debate and new piece of legislation, the voice of the asylum seeker and the refugee is heard. It is our job to make sure that politicians know about the trauma they have experienced and the hardship they now face – which can easily be forgotten amidst the grandeur of the Palace of Westminster!

We provide briefings to Parliamentarians on the latest issues to affect refugee and asylum seekers. We also help MPs and Peers from across the political spectrum who have an interest in those issues by supporting the All Party Parliamentary Group on Refugees. We have excellent working relationships with senior representatives of all the parties and ensure that they are involved in our campaigning work – taking our campaigns right to the heart of government.

We can also provide support to MPs through our Information Service, our essential reference tool for anyone working with or for asylum seekers and refugees. MPs represent some of the most vulnerable asylum cases and this resource helps serve constituents and support staff. The Refugee Council Information Service is the only comprehensive and regularly updated resource of its kind. Find out more
