It is estimated that thousands of refugees have experience of teaching abroad, and also in the UK, but do not currently have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Refugee teachers have a range of skills to offer, which could also be used to fill vacancies in UK schools, while actively promoting equality and diversity in the workplace.
Many refugees have problems accessing information, advice and guidance, and refugee teachers in particular face additional barriers to employment in the UK, similar to those of refugee doctors, nurses and engineers. Improving opportunities for refugees to enter employment contributes to greater social and vocational integration.
Refugees into teaching will provide opportunities for potential teachers, giving ongoing advice and guidance, helping access to training and work placements, with the final aim of securing QTS or other roles in schools for suitably qualified individuals.
Refugee Council is the lead partner, acting as the central coordination team, and handling registration, and promotion, as well as related policy work.
