Community development: services

These are some of the services the Refugee Council can provide to refugee community organisations:

Fundraising and sustainable development project

Refugee community organisations (RCOs) play a key role in helping refugees to integrate into the UK. The potential demise of RCOs (40% of the nation’s RCOs) in London is of great concern to the continued effectiveness of public policy on the integration of refugees. Following on from the success of the last fundraising and sustainability project, this two year project is designed to meet the current needs of London based RCOs and to address the challenges they face in responding to the current economic climate and funding environment.

As well as providing your RCO with advice and support to access funding, we will provide training and seminars on how to connect with local statutory bodies (e.g. Local Strategic Partnerships) to affect social change within your community and beyond.

The project will provide:

  • customised one-to-one funding surgeries for organisations who need fundraising support in order to further develop their organisations and ensure financial sustainability.
  • help to develop and implement an effective, target-oriented fundraising strategy and identify suitable funding bodies that may be able to support your projects.
  • training/seminars on how to influence statutory bodies through engagement with Local Strategic Partnerships and Local Area Agreements.
  • advice on contracts and commissioning

SCORES Project

Supporting Community Organisations – Refugees Engage in Sport

Football Foundation logoFunded by the Football Foundation, the aim of the SCORES project is to increase participation of refugees in sport, particularly football.

Due to limited resources, RCOs often struggle to run organised sports activities to meet the needs of their communities, resulting in young refugees in particular, resorting to informal disparate groups playing “jumpers for goalposts” football around estates or parks. While funding from various sources may be available for community sports activities, the bureaucracy associated with making an application discourages applications from the established, let alone more transient refugee groups. Due to their reach and unique role in local communities, refugee community organisations are key partners in this project. This 3-year project will be delivered in London (first year) and the West Midlands (second year), with the final year focussing on both regions.

This innovative project will:

  • provide one to one advice and support to RCOs, helping them to develop and fundraise for sports projects
  • organise sports development training sessions for RCOs and refugee sports groups
  • raise awareness of the barriers refugees face in accessing and participating in sports and leisure activities
