Refugee Empowerment Project Campaigns

Refugee Empowerment Project logoTake a look at a range of media (facebook, videos, blogs and articles ) that give a flavour of what the Refugee Empowerment Project (REP) is about and what this year’s campaigners have achieved and continue to work on with their individual campaigns.

Campaign to raise awareness of domestic violence among African and BME communities

As part of the Refugee Council's Refugee Empowerment Project (REP) to develop the campaigning skills of refugees and asylum seekers, Gladys Jusu-Sheriff from Women's Association For African Networking And Development (WAND) UK and her campaign mentor, Jane Tully produced a three minute film as a campaign tool to raise awareness of domestic violence as an issue in African and BME communities and to encourage those who are victims to seek support.
In WAND's experience many women in African communities who are victims of domestic violence are afraid to speak about it. It is seen as a taboo subject and can carry stigma.
WAND along with volunteer members devised a video as their main campaign tool. As part of the film, they created a role play including women who had themselves suffered from domestic violence. The role play characters represented the survivor and a friend encouraging her to seek help. By objectivising the issue through role play, they hope that this film with help others to seek help.
The campaign tool is supported by other voluntary and community groups, as outlined in the closing credits.
