Poll victory for asylum
16 February 2006
In early February, Sky News ran a poll on their website asking their audience to vote on the proposition: "Should failed asylum seekers lose their benefits?" Refugee Council alerted its campaigner supporters and the outcome was that the answer was a resounding "NO" by a majority of nearly 2-1. An astounding 130,300 votes were cast in support of asylum seekers, and the Refugee Council thanks all our supporters who voted - and who asked their friends to join them. ENDS See also: The question itself implies that asylum seekers whose claims have been rejected all receive benefits where in fact, most do not. Details of support are shown in a briefing from the Refugee Council Hard Case Briefing from June 2004. See the full Sky News poll results
