Refugee Council backing national City of Sanctuary movement

7 February 2008

Refugee Council is becoming a national partner of the grass roots City of Sanctuary movement. The movement started in Sheffield with the aim of building a culture of hospitality for refugees and asylum seekers in the city. By September last year, more than 70 local organisations had signed up and the city council also pledged its support. Now, other cities are getting involved, with working groups of local people having been formed in Leicester and Leeds, and interest growing across the country.

Refugee Council will be helping the movement by promoting the City of Sanctuary concept through such events as the first national City of Sanctuary conference on 4th June.

Ends.
