Trafficking in persons
Refugee Council’s policy position on people trafficking, including recommendations [May 06]
This paper sets out the Refugee Council’s policy position on people trafficking, and makes recommendations as to how the UK Government should respond to the issue. Whilst governments and international agencies agree that people trafficking has become more common since the 1990s, involves organised international criminal networks, and affects thousands if not millions of people worldwide, there is very little robust evidence about either the prevalence of trafficking or the experiences of trafficked victims. However, it is clear that people trafficking is a serious human rights violation that demands an urgent response to ensure that all victims of trafficking, including those in the UK, are be offered appropriate and sufficient support and protection.
