ESOL funding

Briefing paper on 'English for Speakers of Other Languages' and Further Education Funding Changes 2007/08 announced by the Learning and Skills Council [Nov 07]

The Refugee Council believes that all asylum seekers and refugees should have access to free 'English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)' provision. The briefing paper gives an overview of the changes in the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) funding for 07/08. It argues that they will lead to the further exclusion of asylum seekers and refugees, with particular reference to employment and training. It also highlights the importance of ESOL to the lives of individuals and communities. The paper recommends a wider vision for the participation of refugees and asylum seekers in post 16 education and training that strengthens social inclusion and refugee integration.

We also have included a Short Guide for Advisers on Access to Further Education covers the categories of learners eligible for LSC funding and fee remission.

Both published in Sept 07. The briefing is an update of a previous briefing published in June 07, May 07, March 07 and January 07.
