Status & category matter
Refugee types, entitlements and integration support [Dave Brown for Yorkshire & Humber Regional Migration Partnership, January 2008]
Simultaneous to an increased focus upon refugee integration, there has been a fragmentation of what it means to be a ‘refugee’ in the UK. Successive policies determining different statuses and categories for refugees have led to increasingly complicated and exclusive entitlements and integration support arrangements.
The report identifies 43 'types' of refugee, possessing a combination of nine different statuses and eleven categories. The statuses determine the entitlements of a refugee, whereas the category affects access to integration support. Detailed findings illustrate the complexity of the system, alongside a series of tables, which can be used as a simpler reference guide.
