Refugee Council response to the Home Office Consultation on the Qualification Directive [August 2006]

The Refugee Council responds to a consultation on the "Implementation of Council Directive 2004/83/EC of 29 April 2004 on minimum standards for the qualification and status of third country nationals or stateless persons as refugees or as persons who otherwise need international protection and the content of the protection granted."

The EU asylum qualification directive sets out a common definition of who is a refugee and who is otherwise entitled to international protection. It also sets minimum standards for the entitlements of those who qualify for status. The UK and other EU member states have until the 10th October to comply.

The Refugee Council welcomes this consultation and hopes that the Directive will contribute to establishing a Common European Asylum System based on the highest standards of refugee protection. Our response identifies areas where we believe current UK policy and practice should be improved so that those in need of international protection are provided with the status and rights that enable them integrate rapidly and to rebuild their lives in the UK.
