Refugee Council response to the government consultation on proposals for a Single Equality Bill for Great Britain [September 2007]

The Department for Communities and Local Government issued its consultation on proposals for a Single Equality Bill for Great Britain. The Refugee Council responded to the Green Paper arguing that any future Single Equality Act and public duty need to recognise refugee and asylum seeker status as protected categories. Our response notes the good practice that has been built up, particularly under the race equality stream and the importance of building on this. However, we highlight the additional barriers refugees and asylum seekers can face compared to ethnic minority people in the UK. We also recommend that refugees and asylum seekers are explicitly included in the remit of the Commission for Equality and Human Rights.
