BIA Stats review

Refugee Council response to “Review of Border and Immigration Agency Statistics on Control of Immigration" [February 2008]

In December 2007 the Border and Immigration Agency (BIA) announced that it was conducting a review of how it collects and publishes statistics relating to immigration control and invited comments.

The Refugee Council has sent a response expressing concern about the apparent desire to reduce the amount of data published into the form of “headline” reporting of immigration control. The need is for information of the right kind that can provide measures of both performance on processing asylum claims, as well as outcomes, so that these can be compared over time. The Refugee Council is thus strongly in favour of the production of cohort statistics tracking the progress of cases through the system.

There is also a need to produce regional statistics in order to measure the impact of decentralised processing and decision making.

The Refugee Council welcomes the intention to include a review of how more detailed management information may be made more accessible and hopes to take this forward in discussions with BIA.
