Refugee Council response to The Path to Citizenship: next steps in reforming the immigration system [May 2008]

The UK Border Agency’s consultation The path to citizenship: next steps in reforming the immigration system outlines proposals for routes to citizenship and settlement. In the foreword, the Home Secretary recognises the value of migration over the years to the UK and the need to provide a clearer and simpler route to citizenship. However, we do not think UKBA’s proposals are either fair or easier to understand. The Refugee Council believes the proposals will have an adverse affect on refugees and their communities. Our response outlines these concerns further and provides alternatives to routes towards citizenship and settlement.
