Community Cohesion and Migration
Refugee Council response to the Community Cohesion and Migration Inquiry by the Communities and Local Government Committee [January 2008]
In December 2007, the parliamentary Communities and Local Government Committee announced an inquiry on Community Cohesion and Migration (see www.parliament.uk/clgcom). The Refugee Council response to the inquiry highlights to the Committee that refugees and asylum seekers have a particular set of experiences and entitlements before they arrive and when in the UK which determine aspects of their lives and ability to integrate. It argues that these need to be taken into account by policy makers when considering issues of cohesion and migration. In particular the response argues that government policy on asylum has a negative impact on community cohesion and needs to be changed.
