Refugee Council response to the Home Affairs Committee Inquiry into Human Trafficking [February 2008]

The Refugee Council has responded to the Home Affairs Committee Inquiry into Human Trafficking. We work face-to-face with children and young people who are victims of trafficking and believe that suspected victims who claim to be children should be offered safe accommodation as a priority in advance of any age assessment. A three month reflection period would enable victims of trafficking time to talk about their experiences. The risk of re-trafficking should be examined in any assessment of whether return is safe. The Refugee Council recommends a system of independent support advocates who are specialists in trafficking be set up to ensure multi-agency working on behalf of victims.
