Violence against women

Refugee Council response to violence against women strategy consultation [May 2009]

The Refugee Council has responded to a Government consultation on how to combat violence specifically against women and girls. In our response we strongly support the Home Secretary’s statement in the consultation document that ‘violence against women and girls is unacceptable, whatever the context, whatever the circumstances’. We stress that the strategy to combat violence against women and girls must fully include and address refugees’ and asylum seekers’ particular needs and experiences. And we urge that the strategy address the fact that in many cases, women and girls are exposed to violence precisely because they are refugees or asylum seekers.

Information about the consultation is available at www.homeoffice.gov.uk/keepwomensafe and http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/documents/cons-2009-vaw/
