Asylum support for unaccompanied children Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children are young people aged under 18 who are not accompanied by a parent or guardian, and who apply for asylum. Unaccompanied children seeking asylum are not supported in the same way as adult asylum applicants. Under the Children Act 1989, support for unaccompanied children is the responsibility of local authority social services departments, regardless of the child’s immigration status. This section covers section 17 support, section 20 support and what to do when the young person turns 18.
