Holding a sponsored activity or event is a fun way of raising refugee awareness and vital funds for the Refugee Council.
There is a wide array of activities which you can choose from – run the London Marathon, organise a concert, hold an auction, or go on a sponsored walk. Whatever activity you choose, you can set up a page on Justgiving.com - a quick, easy and safe way to raise money from your friends and family.
Here are examples of how two people decided to support the Refugee Council:
Jeff Powell ran the 2007 London Flora Marathon, finishing in superb time, 3 hours and 20 minutes, raising over £650 for the Refugee Council.
Jeff shares his motivations:
“I see the kind of work that the Refugee Council does as a vital complement ‘here' to the work that international development agencies do ‘over there’. To me, neither is charity – both are part of our responsibilities as citizens – working in some small way to compensate for the problems that our nations, our corporations, our lifestyles often have a hand in creating.”
Kathryn Bird lived on £5 food parcels for 7 days and slept rough for 24 hours, taking part in a national day of action for the ‘Still Human Still Here’ campaign.
She said: “I’ve seen first-hand the amazing work that the Talks Team and staff of the Refugee Council do, and my hope was that in choosing this charity, I could contribute in at least some way to helping them keep up this vital work.”
