Supporting Refugee Community Organisations
Very often, the most vulnerable refugees in the UK turn to their own communities for support when are feeling lonely and isolated in an unfamiliar world.
Finding this kind of support is particularly important for vulnerable women who so desperately need to find someone they can trust, someone they can understand and who understands them. Refugee Community Organisations (RCOs) are uniquely placed to understand the very diverse backgrounds of the women they see and the traumatising experiences and journeys they have endured. RCOs provide guidance and support tailored to their most pressing needs. They help build up their confidence and ability to cope with daily situations such as getting their children to school, or seeing the doctor or just doing the shopping. Through social events and English lessons they also help women gain a better understanding of the culture of the society they live in. The Refugee Council’s work with RCOs is crucial to the lives and social integration of vulnerable women. We provide training, information and one to one support for these organisations so that they, in turn, can support refugees and asylum seekers from all over the world. In turn RCOs can help us to ensure their views and needs remain high on the national and local government agenda. With your help we can continue to support Refugee Community Organisations to make a lasting difference to the lives of so many vulnerable people. | | "Being an asylum [seeker] here, it’s like I’m not existing."
