We are recruiting for a Integration Volunteer who will be able to work 1 day per week/Wednesday or Thursday (6 month + commitment). Please note there will be 4 compulsory training sessions in the month of June 2018.

The Integration team aims to provide advice and support to newly recognised refugees in the 5 main areas of immigration, housing, health, welfare and employment. The team currently has established an employment support service and has a history of providing housing, welfare and health related advice.

We are now looking for the support of new volunteers interested in joining this fast paced, exciting and rewarding service.  We are keen to attract people who have experience in providing housing and/or welfare advice so that you can help us delivery high quality advice.  Volunteers are crucial in our ability to deliver this service effectively.

Since June 2014, Refugee Council has been running a new volunteer lead advice service for refugees residing in London. The service focuses its support on those refugees who were relatively recently given their status to remain (refugee status granted within last 6 to 12 months) and are struggling to make the transition from being an asylum seeker to being a refugee.

An asylum seeker is granted refugee status following a positive decision on their asylum case. Asylum seekers are generally supported by the Home Office through the National Asylum Support Service in the form of temporary accommodation and limited subsistence costs. Refugees, on the other hand, have full access to mainstream services with similar entitlements to other UK residents. Making the transition from Asylum Support to mainstream support can be complicated and difficult to navigate. Many newly recognised refugees can face periods of vulnerability during this period and run the risk of becoming homeless and financially destitute.

The volunteer role

Volunteers will use their advice giving experience to provide advice to clients attending appointments at our offices, but may also assist clients to access other services by accompanying them to appointments and acting as advocates to ensure that they receive the services to which they are entitled.

Integration advice volunteers will be working alongside other staff and volunteers within the Integration team and will be supported day to day by a Project Coordinator.
