Melody's story - Refugee Council

Melody’s story

Melody lost her parents when she was 10 years old. She was only 12 when she arrived in the UK by herself. Sent from her home country of Nigeria to live with a family friend, she was treated as a slave.

She was beaten and sexually abused by men who visited the house. Thrown out for refusing to comply with her ‘Aunt’, Melody lived on the streets for nine months. She resorted to begging for food.

Melody was severely traumatised when she was first referred to the Refugee Council. It took a great deal of time and patience for her to open up about the horrors she’d experienced.

We helped Melody continue her education, get mental health counselling and meet other young refugees. Thankfully, now she has a safe home to stay in, a new family to be there for her and is slowly, piecing a life together.
