Naomi’s question: how can we change attitude of authorities?

Q: Naomi (Facebook) – How can we change such deep suspicion by authorities and inhumane treatment of vulnerable people?

A: Francesco – Hi Naomi, it’s good to hear from you. Speaking up for refugees and asylum seekers is fundamental – we need to change public attitudes on this issue and show the authorities that there are people who will challenge government policies that have such a devastating effect on asylum seekers’ lives – like you saw with Mohibullah in Dispatches. So talk to your friends! Get informed on the issues so that you can challenge prejudice when you hear it. Our ‘Truth about asylum’ booklet would be a good place to start. See http://www.refugeecouncil.org.uk/practice/basics/truth.htm.

My campaigns colleagues have said you should find out where your MP stands on asylum issues. You could write to him or her and request they speak to Damian Green about it, the Immigration Minister. Just make sure you are clear about what you are asking for. Or you could also sign up to our campaigns email and our campaigns team will email you with regular actions for you to take. Just send an email to campaigns@refugeecouncil.org.uk with ‘subscribe’ in the subject line.
