EU-UK Summit: An opportunity to reduce small boat crossings

EU-UK Summit: An opportunity to reduce small boat crossings
- The EU-UK Summit is an important opportunity to reduce crossings through practical co-operation
- The current approach to Channel crossings isn’t working: crossings are up nearly a third in 2025 even though EU data shows fewer people attempted the journey in the first three months of 2025 compared to same period in 2024
- 2024 was the deadliest year in the Channel. At least 11 people have already lost their lives this year
- The UK and the EU should put in place processes that enable the safe transfer of people with strong reasons to apply for asylum in the UK, while also allowing for the return of people who have an active claim in an EU country
On 19 May, the Presidents of the European Council and European Commission will meet with Keir Starmer at a summit in the UK.
The summit should be a key moment in increasing the co-operation between the UK and the EU to reduce the number of people crossing the Channel in small boats and reducing the number of people dying.
