Introduction to Working with Separated Children

The Refugee Council is the leading UK charity working with separated children seeking asylum. We have provided advice and support to these children as well as to those caring for them for over two decades. We deliver bespoke training on this subject matter to a range of professionals. Our trainers have extensive up-to-date knowledge and front-line experience of this work which ensures that our courses are dynamic, relevant and engaging. Participants have given us consistently positive feedback:

"It was one of the best trainings I have been on in many years and if they could roll it out for everybody that would be great."

"It was extremely well-presented from a training perspective, the trainer was v knowledgeable, the style of presentation was very good, it was personal and it was accessible but it was very professionally delivered and used a range of methods."

Participants will gain knowledge of relevant legal and support processes and examine the implications of these for the care and protection of these young people. By completing this one-day course participants will have a practical understanding of:

  • Who separated children are
  • The asylum determination process and the roles of those involved
  • The legal and policy framework for support and care
  • Assessing the needs of separated children and planning for their support
  • Some of the common issues faced by separated children and those working with them
