In response to the news that the Home Secretary David Blunkett MP has resigned Maeve Sherlock, Chief Executive of the Refugee Council said:
“David Blunkett took a tough line on asylum and many of the measures he introduced we profoundly disagree with. In particular, some of the measures he took in getting a grip on the asylum system have meant that many vulnerable people who need a place of safety are not getting protection.
“However, Mr Blunkett spoke up for the benefits of migration into the UK and introduced a programme of resettling refugees here in Britain from camps around the world.
“The challenge for the new Home Secretary will be to sidestep the headlines and to take a measured and rational look at the asylum process. It’s in everybody’s interest for initial decision-making on asylum claims to be improved.”
