Statement from Refugee Council on Jack Straw’s comments to the Observer on proposals to cap the number of refugees admitted to the country.

Nick Hardwick, Chief Executive of the Refugee Council said: The Refugee Council calls for the Labour Party to urgently clear up the muddle surrounding its asylum policy, following the Observer article today.

“The Observer claimed that Labour would put a cap on the number of refugees admitted to the UK regardless of the merits of their claims.

“If this is correct then Labour are proposing to go much further that their manifesto commitment and would need to fundamentally rewrite the Geneva Convention.

“The policy as reported would be much more harmful to refugees than even the current Conservative proposals”.
