Taking our anti-destitution campaign to the Lib Dem Party Conference

With the Lib Dem party faithful camped out in Brighton for the week, the Refugee Council headed down to the south coast to run a fringe meeting on our campaign on asylum destitution: Still Human Still Here.

The Lib Dem Conference is the smallest of the main party conferences and has an intimate atmosphere – every third person on the seafront was either an MP, or a Lib Dem-friendly celebrity, here to do a turn and entertain the delegates!  One such celeb, Radio 4 stalwart Sandi Toksvig, did a question-and-answer session with Lib Dem Ming Campbell during which they engaged in a toe-curling bout of flirtation!

Anyway, we were there on much more serious business.  We had brought Yeukai to share her testimony with Lib Dem activists.  Yeukai is an asylum seeker involved in political opposition to Mugabe back in Zimbabwe.  She claimed asylum here but was turned down and is now destitute.

You’ll be able to read more of Yeukai’s story on the Still Human Still Here blog which was launched yesterday with a contribution by Lib Dem Home Affairs Spokesman and all-round high-flier, Nick Clegg MP.

Join the debate throughout the party conferences on the Still Human Still Here blog, where we are asking, what should we do about refused asylum seekers?
