When my children were very young, we used to offer hospitality in our home to people seeking sanctuary in the UK. My daughter became very close to one of our long-term guests, who is still a family friend (and still in the country with no right to work). Now my daughter is old enough to read the Paddington stories, she understands immediately what it is like for the Browns to take in a homeless refugee. I just hope Paddington isn’t arrested at dawn, as happened to our friend, and kept in a detention centre for four months. Actually, might make a good story…
