Call for women seeking asylum to be protected from violence on International Women’s Day

The government’s strategy to protect women from violence is being undermined by harsh asylum policies, that leave asylum seeking women open to violence and exploitation in the UK, the Refugee Council has warned today.

To mark International Women’s Day, the Refugee Council has published a briefing outlining the risks facing women who have been refused asylum, and have been forced into destitution. As a result many women are forced to enter into dangerous situations in order to survive, including abusive or exploitative relationships or prostitution.

A fifth of the women we worked with through our Powerful Women’s Project had experienced violence after arrival in the UK.
